Sirmione, the lake and history

From the Grottoes of Catullus, to the cChurch of S. Pietro in Mavino, and the Scaliger’s Castle, as well as Palazzo Callas…the interesting historical sites in Sirmione definitely match your curiosity for tourist attractions and landscapes.
The particular shape of this strip of land, surrounded by water to the north and comprising the three small hills Cortine, San Pietro in Mavinas and the "Grottoes of Catullus" have made this peninsula a holiday destination for high-ranking families, even as far back as the Romanesque era.

The ruins of the Roman villa (first century A.D.) which according to legend belonged to the poet Catullus, who lived during the first century B.C., stand on the hill known as the “Grottoes of Catullus”. The "Grottoes of Catullus” is the most impressive archaeological dig in northern Italy. But Sirmione is not just about history and nature: a hot and sulphurous spring, the Bojola, which surges from the sea bed 250 metres from the eastern shore makes Sirmione one of the most well-known thermal and healing centres.
And last, but by no means least, Sirmione is rich in tourist attractions such as beaches, markets, shopping.

The nights and days fly by in Sirmione!
